Oneida Cutlery

Oneida Cutlery traces its origins to one of the most unusual beginnings in American manufacturing. Founded in the mid-1800s in Oneida, New York, it began as part of a utopian religious commune known as the Oneida Community. Seeking self-sufficiency, the group started making silverware in 1880. Their craftsmanship quickly earned a reputation for quality and elegance, and by the early 20th century, Oneida had become a leader in stainless steel flatware.

Breaking away from its communal roots, Oneida evolved into a successful commercial enterprise, pioneering mass production techniques while preserving refined design. It was the first American company to produce stainless steel flatware on a large scale, helping make fine tableware accessible to the middle class.

Throughout the 20th century, Oneida became a household name, synonymous with tradition, weddings, and everyday meals alike. Despite changes in ownership and shifting global markets, Oneida's legacy endures—an emblem of American ingenuity, blending artistry with utility at the dinner table.
